It was famously the site of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to debate the proposed Maritime Union and the more persuasive British North American Union, now known as Canadian Confederation. From this, the city adopted as its motto:

Charlottetown Historic Tour
Starting in Charlottetown, the tour takes in Water Street and Great George Street, both restored sections of Older Charlottetown, and past Saint Dunstan's Basilica, historic Province House and Confederation Center of the Arts. Other sites included on the tour: Charlottetown Driving Park, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Belvedere Golf Course, Experimental Farm, University Of Prince Edward Island, Victoria Park, Governor's House, and beautiful Beacon Fields, home of the Islands Heritage Foundation. Recommended time: 2 Hours Tours are $70 per hour 2 to 6 hours long with a max of 7 for the minivan The Wheelchair accessible coach can seat up to 7 with wheelchairs or 14 able bodied passengers.
